17th AMHA Annual Conference, 2011

hahndorf.jpgMonday, 12 Sept to Sunday,18 Sept
Hahndorf, South Australia

The 17th annual conference of the AMHA, will be held in the German township of Hahndorf located near Mt Barker just 30 mins from the centre of Adelaide in the beautiful Adelaide Hills.  Surrounding Hahndorf is the site of some of Australia’s earliest mining activity and includes historic gold, copper and silver-lead mines, and mining townships.  In addition there are historic brickworks, an operating metal mine and one of Australia’s largest mine rehabilitation projects.

The conference theme is Australia’s Earliest Mining Era which refers to the first era of metal mining in Australia which took place in the Mount Lofty Ranges of South Australia in the period 1841-1851.  This is the decade prior to the discovery of gold in them eastern States when South Australia possessed most of Australia’s metal mines.  The Kapunda and Burra mines belong to this era but the nearby Mount Barker Special Survey of 1846 resulted in the Kanmantoo, Bremer, Paringa, Wheal Ellen, Aclare and other mines in the district.  Papers on any aspect related to the conference theme are encouraged, but papers on all topics related to mining history are welcome.

The business sessions of the conference when papers are presented, will be from Sept 14 to 17 at the Hahndorf Institute.  There is plenty of suitable accommodation available in Hahndorf within walking distance of the Institute.  Buses run from the Adelaide airport to the city where connections can be made to Hahndorf.

adelhills.jpgMany might wish to see more of the Adelaide Hills which offers numerous walking and cycling trails, great attractions, welcoming cellar doors, quality pubs and restaurants, good shopping, an abundance of fresh local produce and a wide range of accommodation.  Weather at this time of year is beginning to warm up with days in the mid 20s and cool evenings so bring light clothing plus a jacket.
